Mission Statement
"The mission of the Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community."

The Healthy Athletes initiative is dedicated to providing health services and education to Special Olympics athletes, and changing the way health systems interact with people with intellectual disabilities. Through free health screenings, training for healthcare professionals, and evaluation of the health status of people with intellectual disability, Healthy Athletes has become a powerful public health organization worldwide.
 
The goals of Healthy Athletes are as follows :
To improve access to care at event-based and other health screening clinics;
To make appropriate referrals for follow-up to community health professionals;
To train health care professionals and students about the needs of people with ID;
To collect, analyze and disseminate data on the health needs of people with ID; and,
To advocate for improved health policies and programs for people with ID.
 
We organize Health Athletes program for our athletes under seven disciplines such as,

FUN Fitness
Health Promotion
Healthy Hearing
Opening Eyes
Medfest
Special Smiles
 
Opening Eye (2010) - 2nd to 5th June-2010, Gandhinagar ( SOG 6th State Championship-2010)
As per evaluation form, Opening Eyes Programme total 901 athletes were screened, out of that 135 athletes were referred for further treatment and 338 athletes were given Spectacles. Through a global partnership of SOI and Lions Clubs International (LCI), and with corporate support from Safilo, Essilor, and Liberty Optical, SO athletes receive the following :
Extensive vision and eye health tests and refraction for     those requiring further screening;
Prescription eyeglasses, if needed;
Prescription protective sports eyewear, if appropriate; and,
Referral for follow-up care
 
24th to 27th December, 2008, Surat (SOG 5th State Championship-2008)
There were three events of HA organized simultaneously with Special Olympics 5th State Championship-2008
Health Promotion
In Health Promotion total 710 athletes were screened, out of that 387 athletes referred for further treatment.
Fit Feet
Fit Feet total 786 athletes were screened, out of that 373 athletes referred for further treatment.
 
21st to 23rd December, 2007, Baroda (SOG 4th State Championship-2007)
Special Olympics Gujarat always takes care for their athletes. Recently on 21st to 23rd Dec 07, Special Olympics Gujarat organized Opening Eye, FUN fitness and Health Promotion along with district tournament.
FUN Fitness
As per evaluation form, in FUN fitness total 447 athletes were screened, out of that 50 athletes referred for further treatment.
Opening Eyes
Same as in Opening Eyes total 509 athletes were screened out of that 134 athletes were received prescription eyewear and remaining 375 athletes got sports goggles 
Health Promotion
In Health Promotion total 541 athletes were screened and all were medically cleared.
 
15th to 17th December, 2006, Junagadh (SOG 3rd State Championship-2006)
Opening Eyes
Total 404 Athletes were screened in this event. Dr. Kunda Ganatra, Dr. Rajiv Prasad and Dr. Gaurav Bhargawaz and Interns from Nagari School of Ophthalmetry and Mumbai Eye Hospital gave the treatment to the Special Athletes. The Eyes of Special Athletes were checked by Special techniques taking and explaining needful and precautionary steps to the Escorts.
